6 Tips for Mindful Aging

Aging – it’s a boogeyman that’s plagued Americans for decades. The fear of growing older is visible everywhere, from the glut of anti-aging beauty products in big box stores to the growing number of surgical options designed to make it look like you’ve turned back the hands of time.

Here’s the thing, though. No one escapes aging. It happens to us all, and failure to accept and embrace that can lead to wasting years of your life chasing an ephemeral dream, rather than actually living (and enjoying) your life. Mindful aging can help.

What Is Mindful Aging?

Simply put, mindful aging is the opposite of what Western society teaches us. It’s the acceptance of the fact that we’re going to age and our bodies will change. It’s embracing those changes as inevitable while not putting limits on what you can do or achieve in life.

How do you practice mindful aging, though? Here are six tips to put you on the right path.

  1. Realize that some things cannot be changed.

There are things that we simply cannot change. We all age and we’ll all experience symptoms of that process. It should not be something fearful. Embrace it and appreciate the differences in each stage of life.

  1. Care for your body.

Too often, we think we can push our bodies to the brink and even beyond without any repercussions, but if you want to age mindfully, you’ll need to care for your body properly. That means taking time to rest and giving your body the vitamins and nutrients it needs. It also means exercising, eating right, and losing weight to fight back against the risk of lifestyle-related diseases like type 2 diabetes.

  1. Have goals and dreams.

Aging does not have to mean giving up on goals and dreams. You might just need to change yours. Set goals – what would you do with your life if you had no limits? What change would you want to make in the world? Define what you want to achieve and then plan how to reach it.

  1. Forgive yourself and move on.

Guilt and regret can mire us in the past and make mindful aging difficult, if not impossible. Let go of those things holding you back. Forgive yourself and stop clinging to things that no longer benefit you. Learn from the experience and let that inform your future.

  1. Find ways to be more creative.

Want to add incredible richness to your life? Tap into your creativity. Painting, writing, directing home movies – all of these things ground you in the present moment and allow you to deeply enjoy the time that you have, rather than frittering it away worrying about something that you cannot change.

  1. Find a partner to support your health and wellness.

Don’t try to go it alone. Find a partner that can help support your mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
